<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> Two years
ago I decided to embark on something that was totally out of my league. I am a nurse
and yes I teach, but in the clinical setting. This journey to become certified
as an online instructor has been amazing. The final class was the easiest but I
had trouble getting into and allowing my creativity to flow. Producing digital content was literally
pulling all the previously built pieces together into one shell. In that it
didn’t require technical skills it requires one to understand how to navigate
through blackboard and be able to set things up appropriately. We took our
class content from the previous class and further developed it to fit the shell. My class was entitled Introduction to
Nursing Leadership.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> Some of
the processes were time consuming because it took several attempts to get it to
work properly. Overall, I gained the necessary knowledge to be able to set up a
class appropriately on Blackboard. This should also be an eye opener for other
learning management systems. I had difficulty being creative with this class.I think that was just because I had so much going on at one time. Finishing up with my doctoral degree and breaking in a new CEO on my job has been draining.
But I am confident that when I design my online courses that they will be
creative and attractive to the learner.

the online environment. I am glad I decided to take this journey and explore an

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> This
segment of the online teaching certification program is producing digital
content is what I have been waiting. At the conclusion of this course I expect
to be able to compile all the components of an online course together and set
up course structure on the learning management systems (LMS), blackboard.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> Learning

am able to quickly grasp hoe to effectively utilize them.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> Having a well-designed
course is only half the battle. The course has to be constructed to facilitate student
engagement. Upon completion of this course I want to have a clear concept of
how to engage students and make the overall learning experience for the
students and myself a positive one.

development. Having interaction in face to face for me is easily accomplished. To accomplish this feat in the online
environment can be a bit challenging. Designing interactive components is
integral to the design. The process has begun but needs to be perfected by the
end of this course. I am excited to be reaching the climax of online teaching
certification.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> The
journey down course design road was a bit bumpy at times. I have to say I
really didn’t know what to expect. Overall, it was an enjoyable course. I have to
admit that there is a lot of consideration that goes into the design that I had
not thought of. For example everything connects from the objectives to the
assessment.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> Designing
the course was done in a step by step process. I have written objectives before
but workshops or seminars which written the same as for a class but its less
content. The writing of objectives for a course gets a bit challenging because
you have course objectives and lesson objectives.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> You have
to consider learner and non-learner issues with the design. Non-learner issues
are those things that deal with the design itself. The books that will be used
to other resources, assignments that align with objectives and assessments are all
part of the non-learner issues. Then there are the learner issues. These issues
are directly related to learner like their age or geographical location.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Selecting assessments that align with the learning
objectives and learning activities is a component of the design that flows like
a face to face class. Using diagnostic assessments can be challenging in the
online environment requiring the distant learner to seek places where he/she
can take proctored examinations. Formative assessment is important in academia
whether it be face to face or online. This type of assessment gives the learner
an idea of their accomplishments and areas in need of more attention.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> Content
presentation included three areas of interaction student-content interaction,
student-student interaction and student-instructor interaction. Each of these
areas has to be addressed in the design. They need to connect with the learning
objectives and activities of learning in the course. The design of the course
should allow for adequate interactions to facilitate understanding of content,
community building and instructor evaluation of student progress.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> The
difficulty of this course for me was writing to the design. If I just had to
design the course and not write a paper based on the steps of the design the
challenge would have been less. I don’t think I am a bad writer but the
specifics needed for this paper kept throwing me off. It also made me read a
lot more because the leaner, non-learner issues were not simple to understand.
Coming from leadership to academia makes you put on a different hat and look at
things from a different perspective.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The review process of the design class was very
interesting. I think I had the same challenge with the review that I had with
the design. Proofreading is one of my strong points but I missed content issue
on the paper I reviewed. Again it was about the structure of the paper that
gave me a headache.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> Design worksheets were done for the first three
lessons of the course. This process taught us how to link everything together
from the learning objectives to the learning activities. The items that were
designed for the content areas of the paper were plugged into the design via
these worksheets. The assessments were also a part of the worksheets. The worksheets
are like a blue print for each lesson and serve as guide for each lesson.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Overall, I count the experience as being a
successful one. Writing to the design is hopefully something I won’t have to do
again, but in the event that I have I think I am better prepared to do so. I’m
ready for the last and final course of online certification and then ready to
be a successful online instructor.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;"> The next
step to online certification has arrived. This class deals with design of the
courses and I am on tiptoes of anticipation for what this class will add to my
knowledge of online teaching. Having not taught in the online environment it
will be interesting to see the difference in preparing an online class to a traditional
class. Thus far I have learned both learning and teaching styles along with how
to work with different learning styles. Facilitating
the course in a live session was a great experience that brought periods of
anxiety and hopefulness. In the end my partner and I had a successful session. I
had a better understanding of when to use summative or formative assessment after
facilitating. Learning to design the
course will put another notch in my belt.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">The previous online classes taught me that design
needs to follow an organized format; the lecturette and resources need to be
reflective of lesson topic, checking links in design is an ongoing process and
that the format should be easy for the student to follow.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;">Upon completion of this design course I expect to
know not only how to design my classes but be able to make them both
challenging and interactive. I also hope to have a better feeling about group
projects, because they are important and I need to utilize them in my design. Strategies
for learning and applying best practices to the online environment are also
amongst the things I intend on adding to repertoire of knowledge.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> Part two of ONTL 651 has been a delightful experience. It started off with a lesson on pedagogy which is the art or science of teaching. Then we went into synchronous and asynchronous teaching. I appreciate both types of teaching styles. I believe my creative will blossom in online teaching with repeated exposure. Asynchronous includes such things as lecturette, readings materials and discussion board. The discussion board assignment is designed to evaluate students understanding of the materials. The instructor’s presence on the discussion board is paramount to the survival of the students. That doesn’t mean that a comment has to be made to every student. I see myself have good dialogue with the students adding to their learning experience and them adding to mine. Synchronous sessions are available depending on what learning system your school utilizes. We use both Wimba and Blackboard Collaborate. The live session is a time to have conversation between students and instructor. Live sessions can be challenging for the distant learner. Therefore, timing is important and they should not all be mandatory. People have busy lifestyles and that is usually why they take online classes.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> Managerial role was presented from two angles setting the stage and the other was managerial role throughout the semester. What I took away from both of these is to stay focused, be organized, make it about the student and have fun. Yes have fun there is no reason why learning should not be fun even for the instructor. The technical role has always been my greatest concern. I’m happy to report that with each and each session I am getting more and more comfortable with technical things. Some technical things are out of the instructor’s control, like problems with the software. Part two definitely added to more limited knowledge of online teaching. The more I learn the more I like the idea of teaching online classes.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> This facilitation week was most enjoyable, I felt like a real online instructor. I also enjoyed the Wimba live classroom session and got a feel for keeping my presence noted on the discussion board. My partner and I were so excited about facilitating that we built the entire module only to find out that we didn’t need to do all of that. The experience as a whole was a great one. It gave me an even better idea of what online teaching is about because we built the module. Finding appropriate resources for lesson content was challenging but eye opening.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> The synchronous session was approached from the items we were using for our lecturette and other readings. I like to use power points for power points and then elaborate with spoken word. I was pleased with the amount of participants at our live Wimba classroom session and the feedback that we received. I was concerned that there was going to be some technical issues. I played around with Wimba so that I would be comfortable to the functionality. Even still as the class began I was still nervous that something was going to go wrong, sure enough we had a minor glitz the instructor reminded us to start the recording and we still forgot. After then everything was smooth sailing. I talk fast so when teaching I have to pay to pay close attention to how fast I am talking.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> Asynchronous facilitating went well also. I watched the discussion board for a few days giving the students a chance to post and start the dialogues. Then I posted my response and started to reply to some of their post and ask questions to stimulate even deeper thought processes. Lesson learned from this was when teaching I need to set days of the week for initial post, that way all students will have an opportunity to get responses to their initial post.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;"> This experience has me on tiptoes of anticipation of having my own online classes.Carol Rozellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00600077443266857642noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6029479971052492057.post-58961519609677078352012-02-08T16:03:00.000-08:002012-02-08T16:03:14.577-08:00End of Part One Blog<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> Class two leading to certification to teach online starting with and overview to online teaching. During this time we were reminded of what we learned last semester and what to look forward in this class. We added something to our introduction that the class didn’t know from last semester. I was pleased that my thoughts of facilitating were validated and enhanced. The reading materials helped me to process facilitating online and begin to prepare for my teams urn at being the facilitators.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> Looking further into blogging was a plus. I found blogs related to my current work that were very interesting and even had some helpful hints that I could use. Reading other blogs assisted me with my decisions of how to incorporate blogging in my classes. I do have some ideas but I am not sure if I would use blogging directly or just have the students to blog.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> Changing roles from classroom teaching to online can be a challenge.

The new semester has started and I have my second online teaching class. This class is entitled Facilitating Online Learning. Once again I am on tiptoes of anticipation. This is a very important part of online teaching for me. I am very familiar with teaching in the traditional face to face class and I am very good with not only building relationships with my students but facilitating their learning as well. Being able to be an effective online facilitator is number one in my book. I want to make sure that I create an environment online that is conducive to learning like I do in the classroom setting.

The expected student outcomes are:

1. Identify the basic competencies required for success as an online facilitator.

2. Apply best practice strategies to facilitate effective asynchronous online discussions.

3. Facilitate synchronous online class sessions.

4. Discuss the various roles involved in facilitating online courses.

I expect to fulfill the outcomes and more simply because it is important to me to be an excellent online instructor, one that my students will recommend my classes to others and be appreciative for the learning process. I am a little apprehensive about the live classroom. I was not able to make the live classroom work for me for an entire class session. Well I guess that just means I have to work harder at it. Chat later!!!!
Carol Rozellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00600077443266857642noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6029479971052492057.post-7409915157132074162011-11-23T18:01:00.001-08:002011-11-23T18:01:55.818-08:00What an Experience This Has Been

As we near the end of the first of a series of four classes for certification for online teaching, I am pleased with what I have learned thus far. Of course, there have been challenges but I was able to overcome them. At times I felt a little overwhelmed but never gave in. Persistence was in my favor. Who would have thought that I would have been able to build my own e-portfolio check it out http://lorac7.wetpaint.com it was easy to build and edit. I enjoyed working with the e-portfolio more than I did the wiki. Only thing is that I was very skeptical about given my e-portfolio my regular name. The internet has enough information about me without me giving it more. It is easy to direct someone to my e-portfolio without using my name. If I decide to use it for more than school purposes I can easily edit the title.

Using theories is not new to me because my profession uses theories as its framework. Cognitivism learning is one of the online theories that is used most frequently in nursing. On learning.theories.com expresses cognitivism as being the metaphor of the mind as computer: information comes in, is being processed, and leads to certain outcomes. That sounds like critical thinking which equates to the nursing process. Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation are the steps of the nursing process. That process can be compared to the metaphor of cognitivism information going in results in plan of care beginning developed, put into action, and then evaluated.

As we move to a patient centered care model, humanism which is learning that is student centered and personalized, and the educator’s role is that of a facilitator sounds much like it. Adjusting to patient centered care model was met with challenges the same as adjusting to student centered learning. Humanist aligns with the practice of holistic nursing care both of which believe that the person should be treated as a whole. Online, teaching reflects humanism because the instructor is truly a facilitator of learning.

The seven principles of good practices in undergraduate education speak to developing relationships with students and the level of communication and feedback and needs to happen. Time of task and respect for talents and diversity of learning takes me back to prior learning this semester. If I were to address this in my online teaching I would have to include readings and activities, perhaps even some exploring of other websites to help drive the understanding of the lesson. Seven principles also mention the advantages of group learning. To facilitate this in my classes I will utilize small discussion groups that have assigned times and to be either in chat room or live classroom. They will have an assigned topic and questions to answer I will be present in the session only as a coach not to lecture.

Group processes aren’t not easy online. Connecting with the team members or just getting them to respond is difficult. I am a visual /verbal learner so feedback on a regular basis in a group project is important to me. I am also a serious learner and like to get my assignments done in a timely manner which is not good for me in group projects. The study of text – static images and multimedia for a group project was a good assignment and called for collaboration that was limited. http://www.nytimes.com/ is a great example of text- static images. It has a great variety of articles where the text and images appropriate. It makes reading the newspaper on line more eloquent than having the paper in your hand. I looked at multimedia as being the websites that has lots movement and interactive activities going on. However, text and static image are part of multimedia as well. The website that has an abundance of multimedia pages is http://www.youtube.com/ . The group developed a wiki and my role in it was writing the introduction and having input in the wording of the rubric. The wiki is also on wetpaint.com. and can be viewed at http://group2wiki.wetpaint.com/ .

I signed up for instant message (IM) in class but never used it. When I was online and was able to be on there for a while there wasn’t anyone on line. I have used instant messaging to chat with my friends. It will probably be a good tool to use for group projects. The problems I have found with instant messages are that everyone doesn’t speak the same language. If IM is used for the classroom there needs to guidelines set to assure that everyone understands the language.

I read the five expectations an online student can have of their instructor. I know that one area that requires the most development is the technological aptitude. I have learned so much regarding the functionality of blackboard and even something’s on the internet that I would have otherwise never explored. The wealth of information and ways the internet can be used to assist learning is flabbergasting. As an online instructor I will make work diligently at giving my students feedbacks in a timely manner, I will set scheduled times for consultation as well as use a course question location on the discussion board. Emailing and instant messages will also be an option of communication.

I am looking forward to moving on to the next course. I believe taking these courses will help me to be as effective as an online instructor as I am as a traditional instructor. As I previously, mentioned in my blog my greatest concern was relationship building with my students. Taking this beginning has helped me to overcome that concern simply because of techniques I have learned in this class that will help me to construct relationships with my students. Farewell for now stay tuned to share with me my continuation of learning to teach online.
Carol Rozellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00600077443266857642noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6029479971052492057.post-64810337491606953052011-10-09T15:04:00.000-07:002011-10-09T15:04:17.704-07:00Middle of Semester
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> Six weeks into the semester and I am still here. That is a good sign. The beginning of learning on-line teaching has had its challenges. Overall there have been good experiences, with each lesson and my learning has been enhanced. The session began with explaining the differences in levels of on line learning. I was excited when I created my avatar that was the first time I attempted to do something like that. Normally I would have had one of my daughters help me do it, but this time I followed the instructions and completed it by myself. YEAH ME. Making my own blog was fun as well. Some people in the class had blogs or were used to reading blogs and maybe even commenting on them. I had not done any of that. So the experience was new to me. I had fun doing it but realized later that I could have been more creative with me. Constructivism and high touch high tech was very interesting to learn about. Within this module I learned some tips on how to use both concepts in the online environment. Then we explored both learning and teaching styles. Within the learning style disabled persons and online learning and teaching was divulged. My thoughts on the differences of online learning were correct. It is always good to validate your thoughts.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> Next we ventured into learning styles. I was pleased to find out that I am not a visual/verbal learner. For many years I considered myself to be a tactile/kinesthetic learner. I had to have things in front of me and touch them in order to really grasp the concept. That made my journey to be a nurse a little difficult at times. Thank God I made and no longer need to touch things or have hands on activities to understand. During the learning style lesson there was a component about persons with disabilities and how they fit into on line learning. Unfortunately most of us in the class had not thought about the disabled in the on line learning environment even though each of our classes at GSU have a statement regarding persons with disabilities. The things we take for granted is an understatement. It was wonderful to learn that they have the same opportunities as others. We read a compelling story about a blind woman that not only mastered on line learning but she is an instructor and took the same certification class I am now in to teach online classes. I admire her courageousness and not letting her disability keep her from fulfilling her dreams. We also watched a video on youtube where the man instructed the viewer how on the blind can benefit from usage of the computer and tools they use as their eyes.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TXuWzcwioU Good example of learning styles

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> Then we moved onto teaching styles. I had no idea what teaching I am. I know that I enjoy building relationships with my students and be an ever present resource in their cell phones even when they are done with my class. My scores ranged from 1.1 to 4.8 which make me a well-rounded instructor. How exciting that is to me. Since teaching is second in line of my passions in my career of nursing it is important to me to not only be an effective teacher but a teacher that understands what the students are going through and present information to them in a format that that would best achieve that. When reviewing learning styles we were challenged to describe how we would teach to the different learning styles. Since my teaching style is well rounded I shouldn’t have a hard time reaching the various learning styles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITmxpe5wjJo This video was a sign of the times and shows how far we have come with teaching styles. It would make the student of today laugh at what we endured then as opposed to know.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> The part of this section I liked the least was the group project. It was so difficult trying to communicate with the team members online. I was not satisfied with the end product because I am used to putting out excellent products not god ones. I was named the team captain however, I backed down when another member of the team seemingly took charge, which is something I should have never done. What I learned from this first of all if I am in charge I identified early how we are going to communicate and set deadlines for assignment sections to be completed. Then I check on the team members daily to see if I can be of some assistance to them. If I am not the team leader I will do my part of the assignment and have it ready before the deadline so each team member will time to review and give me feedback. The hardest part of team projects to me is having people in the group that are not true team players and do not take constructive criticism well. We made and through and to be perfectly honest I am not looking forward to the next one. But I will do my part and be a great team member.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> And finally this first segment introduced us to live classrooms and they can be utilized. I found in my readings that the live classroom or synchronous environment will be a great process for team members to use. Unfortunately, the technical elements need to be tested each time before the assigned session. I found this to be a problem for me. Sometimes for whatever reason I can get into the classroom and other times I can’t. It can however, be available tool if all group members can be on line at the same time. Archived sessions are ok but don’t allow for members to ask questions. Speaker sessions are also good for synchronous or live classroom settings.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> Overall this first half of class has been very good. I look forward to completing and moving on the next session. One thing about me when I decide to do something I press on until it is done. I really like the online environment so I am going to figure out ways to get acquainted with my students so I can still give them that special touch side of me that I love to share.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;">

I definitely didn't see myself pursing a different avenue in my career. I was quite content with nursing leadership until eight years when I was asked to teach clinicals in a nursing program. I had no idea that my passion for teaching was as strong as it was. With each new semester I was met different challenges and experiences that continued to grow my passion. It didn't help any that my students constantly told me how pleased they were with my teaching style and the fact that I cared about how well they did not only in my class but in all their classes.

So here I am today pursing another degree and looking to expand my horizons even more. The question arises why or why not online? Why online is simple, people live very diverse and busy lives and traditional school does not always allow the opportunity for continuing education or advance degrees. Why not would have to be personal convictions as to why one feels that online classes aren't for them. My first experience was with hybrid classes this time last year. I enjoyed the set up of my classes and the fact that I didn't have to go to class every week. Then I experienced a total online class and I didn't like it. Not because I couldn't do the work but because I had become accustomed to structure in my classes and that class lacked structure,

The reason I am taking Intro to Online Teaching is two fold. One because I like the idea of having options and the other is because I want to learn as much as I can in order to give my students a well rounded learning experience and be able to be creative in doing so. I understand online learning to be self learning through guided instruction and assignments to facilitate the learning process. Where online teaching is more of a facilitating learning the assignment of readings and activities to assist the learner in understanding the content. I also see the online teacher as a resource person that is available to the learner by several vehicles. I look forward to this class and all it has to offer and then moving forward through the series. Also taking this class will assist me with my classes that are either hybrid or online. I am not one of those people that think online learning is easy. To be successful at online you have be disciplined and dedicated otherwise you will fall behind in your studies. Fortunately, I am both and I work very hard at getting the most out of all my classes. My philosophy is in order to teach well you have to be a willing and efficient leaner.Carol Rozellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00600077443266857642noreply@blogger.com0
